If you are craving a luxury hotel stay that feels like a relaxing reset, let me introduce you to a beautiful Irish castle hotel in County Clare, Ireland. This Dromoland Castle Review is based on my recent one-night stay over Christmas with my mum. You’ll see throughout this Dromoland Castle Review that we had the best time!
Although I live in San Francisco now, I lived in Ireland for 25 years. I used to go to Clare as a child about twice a year. We always stayed at the Inn at Dromoland (right by the castle). We used to walk the grounds of the castle when I was younger, so Dromoland Castle has always had such a special place in my heart from those childhood trips.

Dromoland Castle is a beautiful castle with historic stone walls inside and out, grand staircases, and so many cozy corners to lounge in. We spent ages sitting by the blazing fires in the drawing room and catching up.
Every staff member we met was warm and welcoming, and the whole place feels like you are getting the most charming, royal treatment.
Before we get into all the details in this Dromoland Castle review (rooms, dining, leisure center, weddings, the golf course, and everything in between), here’s a quick look if you are planning your own stay at Dromoland Castle Hotel:
- Closest airport: Shannon Airport (also called Shannon International Airport) is the easiest option.
- Overall feel: five-star hotel glamour meets large, cozy country house.
- Best for: a special occasion, romantic nights, mother-daughter trips, girls’ trips, and anyone who wants an Irish castle hotel experience without any stress.

Where is Dromoland Castle and is it worth the trip?
Dromoland Castle is in County Clare and is a great base for West of Ireland adventures. If you are planning a road trip, it is also a great stop between Galway and Limerick, and it is an excellent one-night “treat yourself” stay.
If you have ever looked up Dromoland Castle reviews and wondered if it lives up to the hype, my answer is yes! I will definitely be back. Dromoland Castle is worth it.

Ireland travel advice (especially if you are coming from abroad):
- The best way to keep things easy is to fly into Shannon Airport if you can, rent a car, and make Dromoland your cozy base.
- If flights into Shannon are pricey, Dublin Airport is your next best airport (particularly for US flights), but it is a longer drive.
- If you are doing a bigger itinerary (say Northern Ireland/Dublin plus the west coast), Dromoland makes a relaxing “reset” night in the middle.
A little history on Dromoland Castle
Dromoland Castle is rooted in history, often described as the ancestral home of the O’Briens (O’Brien family). The estate was home to the O’Briens for over 400 years, specifically the Barons of Inchiquin. The family line traces back to Brian Boru, who was killed in 1014.
The estate is old-world Ireland in the best way. You feel it the second you walk through the main entrance and start spotting details like a spiral staircase, antique-filled corridors, tall ceilings, red carpets, and historic stone walls.

What Dromoland Castle is like at Christmas
I stayed over Christmas with my mum and I can confirm that Dromoland in winter is so cozy and festive. The fires are roaring, there are massive Christmas trees, and there is something about the whole castle glowing in the cold air that makes it feel even more magical.

You do not need a packed itinerary to enjoy your stay at Dromoland Castle, but you can make it as busy as you like. We enjoyed the castle grounds, leisure center, and mostly relaxed by the many fireplaces and in our room.
Dromland Castle Review: The Rooms
There is a range of room categories, from an entry-level room (still gorgeous) all the way up to splurge suites. You will see categories such as Queen Anne Classic Rooms, Deluxe Rooms, and Suites (including names like the Brian Boru Suite and options like a twin room for family or friends).
My favorite part is that even if you are not in the top category, the experience still feels luxe. All rooms include plush bedding, beautiful bathrooms, a proper turndown service in the evening, and thoughtful details that make it feel special.

Room sizes vary, but if you are comparing options, check the square meters listed and photos for each category when booking (especially if you like having a sitting area, or if you are traveling with young children and want extra space).
Pro tip: If you are deciding between an entry-level room and an upgrade, I always think upgrading is a good idea at a castle hotel because you spend more time in the room than you might at a city hotel. It is part of the experience. We stayed in a Stateroom King and loved our room at Dromoland Castle.

Dromoland Castle Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Dromoland Castle food deserves its own mention because Dromoland makes dining feel like part of the magic, not just something you do in between activities.
Breakfast (absolutely delicious)
Breakfast was genuinely one of the highlights for me. It is an ample breakfast buffet that is full of delicious choices, including fresh smoothies, pastries, brown bread, meats, cheeses, yogurts, juices, cereals, and lots of fresh fruit.
There is also a made-to-order breakfast menu, which includes a full Irish breakfast, French toast, and more. I love it when a hotel does both because sometimes you want to graze the buffet and sometimes you want a hot, cooked-to-order dish.

If you are the kind of person who reads Dromoland Castle reviews to check if breakfast is worth it, I am here to tell you yes, breakfast was delicious.
Lunch at the Fig Tree Restaurant
Another enjoyable part of our stay was having a late lunch at the Fig Tree restaurant after a walk around the estate. The Fig Tree is at the Golf and Country Club side of the property, and it is relaxed, cozy, and feels very “pub-meets-polished.”

We went after wandering the castle grounds and the walled garden (more on that in a second), and it was such a perfect post-walk treat. The menus are more casual, and it is the kind of place where you can settle in and warm up.
Dinner at the Earl of Thomond Restaurant
Dinner at the Earl of Thomond restaurant is the full “castle fine dining” experience. The room itself is stunning, with high ceilings and the iconic crystal chandeliers that make everything feel extra special. Breakfast is also served in the same room.

If you are celebrating something and/or love fine dining, this is a great choice. Expect beautifully presented plates, excellent service, and an elevated dinner. The dinner at the Earl of Thomand is more on the expensive side, so there is also a more reasonable option to dine in a lounge area right beside the Earl of Thomand which serves a diverse menu with delicious options.
Cocktails, the Gallery, and live music
Dromoland also has that cozy lounge feeling that makes you want to stay put all evening. There is a proper cocktail bar, and the Gallery-style spaces are perfect for pre-dinner drinks or a nightcap by the fire. Some nights you will also find live music, which makes an evening at the castle even more enjoyable.

The grounds, walled gardens, and what to do on the property

Even with just one night, you can pack in so much. The estate is huge with lots of paths and walkways that make you want to wander. It is genuinely beautiful and so relaxing to explore.
Definitely fit in:
- the walled garden (so pretty, and it feels like a secret little world)
- strolls around the castle grounds
- a loop that takes you by the water and viewpoints
Activities can include things like:
- yoga
- golf on the golf course
- guided walks
- falconry (including a hawk walk)
- clay pigeon shooting
- and even extras like tennis courts, depending on season and availability
Some activities come at an additional cost, so it is worth checking the schedule before you arrive so you can plan ahead.
Dromoland Castle Leisure Center
I loved that even in winter, you can still get that reset feeling because the leisure center is just a quick 2-minute walk from the castle. I spent time swimming in the indoor pool. The pool area is filled with natural light with a beautiful view out toward the scenic golf course. It is a 17-metre pool, and there is also a sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, and a smaller gym.

If you are someone who likes to stick to your routine while traveling, you will appreciate having a proper fitness center right on site. I am not a “gym on vacation” person, but I always love to go to the pool for an hour or so.
Dromoland Castle Spa
I have been to Dromoland Castle spa before and loved it. On this Christmas visit, I skipped it and enjoyed cozy time by the fires, long chats, and a swim. That said, if the spa is on your wish list, it is an award-winning spa with beautiful treatment rooms and spa packages.

If you have time for a treatment, I think it is such a nice add-on for a special occasion stay. I go home to Galway about two or three times a year so I am planning another day at the spa on one of my next trips home. There is only so much that I can pack into each trip!
Dromoland Castle Weddings
If you have ever dreamed of getting married in an Irish castle, Dromoland is absolutely one of those “wow” venues. The best part is that the setting does a lot of the work for you. Between the castle backdrop, gardens, and the estate’s romantic atmosphere, it is a built-in fairytale.
The golf course and country club experience
Even if you are not a golfer, the Dromoland golf side is part of the charm. The property has an impressive parkland championship course designed by Ron Kirby and JB Carr. It is an impressive 18-hole course set across the estate.
The Golf and country club area is also where you will find the Fig Tree, and it is a lovely part of the resort to explore, even just for the views.
Day trips from Dromoland (Cliffs of Moher and more)

One of the reasons I love Dromoland’s location in County Clare is how easy it is to build in day trips.
Top picks:
- The Cliffs of Moher
- The Aran Islands (weather dependent, but such a special experience)
- Little villages and coastal drives that feel straight out of a movie e.g., Adare
If you are staying longer than one night, Dromoland is perfect as a base for a day trip itinerary. If you are staying for just one night, I recommend slowing down and enjoying the magic of the castle. You can easily spend a day here without leaving if you enjoy walks, swimming, golfing, chatting/reading by the fire, enjoying a treatment at the spa, and just slowing down.
My final thoughts: Is Dromoland Castle worth it?

Yes, Dromoland Castle is worth it. It is genuinely one of those places that feels special the second you arrive. The staff are lovely, the atmosphere is cozy and elegant, the food is memorable (breakfast especially), and the setting is just unreal.
