Firstly, why does frizzy hair happen?
Frizzy hair can happen if your hair is damaged, dry, or chemically treated. The hair cuticle, which is the outer layer of your hair strand, opens up. This lets moisture enter. The hair shaft or hair strand swells and frizz is created. With the below tips on how to maintain frizz, you will be able to treat frizzy, curly hair easily with a few products.
Let’s get to all the tips on how to treat frizzy, curly hair.
How to treat Frizzy Curly Hair
I have included so many tips below on how to get rid of frizzy curly hair. You don’t have to implement every single one of these to see results. You can start by picking one or two things and come back to this blog post again when you are ready to try a new tip for getting rid of frizzy hair.

Some of the simple tips below like a hair mask and letting your hair air dry are the best ways to treat frizzy curly hair. Your curly hair routine does not have to be overly complex in order to get rid of frizzy curly hair.
How to treat frizzy curly hair: Use a pre-shampoo mask
As I mentioned above, frizzy curly hair will happen if your hair is damaged. Physical causes of hair shaft damage include friction from hair accessories, washing, and towel drying.
One of the key ways to treat frizzy curly hair is to repair damaged hair. One of the best hair products for frizzy curly hair is Olaplex 3. This is one of the best hair products for frizzy hair because it works to repair damaged hair caused by mechanical damage (brushing too harshly, knots, tight ponytails, color).
Olaplex 3 can be used once or twice per week to treat frizzy hair. Apply Olaplex 3 to wet hair for 10 minutes before shampooing on each wash day. When I first started using Olaplex 3 for treating frizzy hair, I saw a difference after just one wash!

How to treat frizzy curly hair: Avoid harsh shampoos
Curly hair is naturally dry so it is important to avoid harsh shampoos that are better for oilier hair types. If your curly hair is dry, this will result in frizzy, curly hair. Harsh shampoos will strip the natural oils, which we curly hair girls need!
When choosing hair products for frizzy curly hair, your shampoo is another critical hair product that you need to consider.
These are 4 shampoos that I find are great products for frizzy curly hair
Shop Kérastase Curl Manifesto Sulfate-Free Shampoo for Curly Hair
Shop Bumble and bumble Curl Moisturizing Shampoo
Shop Moroccanoil Curl Enhancing Shampoo
How to treat frizzy curly hair: Avoid excessive washing
As you know, dryness causes frizz. It is important to avoid stripping natural oils by washing your hair too often. To avoid frizzy curls, limit the amount of times you wash your curls to 2-3 times per week max. Do not wash your hair on a daily basis if at all possible.

If you are a gym bunny and need to wash your hair almost every day, then wash with water and condition. Skip the shampoo to avoid dry, over-stripped hair. Use dry shampoo in between washes if you feel like your hair is looking or feeling a little oily.
How to treat frizzy curly hair: Turn down the water temperature in your shower
Another easy way to treat frizzy curly hair is to turn down the water temperature in your shower. Although really hot water may feel nice on your skin and hair, this dries out both your skin and hair and can lead to frizzy hair.
The water in your shower does not have to be cold water. Use a medium temperature which will not strip excess moisture from your hair. You can use a blast of cold water to add shine at the very end after you have conditioned your hair. Squeeze excess water out of your hair, do not wring your hair as this causes mechanical damage.
How to treat frizzy curly hair: Use a hydrating hair mask
A hydrating hair mask is one of the best ways to make curly hair less frizzy. Using a hydrating hair mask once per week can boost your hair with hydration leading to less dry, frizzy curls.
Think of a hair mask like a deep conditioner for curly hair. Say goodbye to dry curly hair by incorporating a hair mask in your weekly curly hair routine.
There are so many great hydrating hair products for frizzy curly hair. Being a curly girl, your hair type needs an extra boost of hydration. While of course, there are different curly hair types, all curly hair is naturally dry. A hydrating hair mask will add essential moisture to all curls.
As I mentioned above, Olaplex 8 is a hydrating hair mask that is a great hair product for frizzy curly hair. Olaplex 8 can be left on for 8 minutes after shampooing. Right now, there is a limited edition hair set of Olaplex 3 (treats damaged hair) and Olaplex 8 (hair mask) where you can save money.
If you are looking for how to control frizzy curly hair quickly, then these would be two great starting hair products for frizzy curly hair. They will take a few minutes each week and you will notice a huge difference in your curls and frizz.
Squeeze the excess water out of your hair before applying your hair mask. The great thing about Olaplex products is that they work on all hair types regardless of hair texture.

One other favorite hydrating hair mask is Briogeo Avocado hair mask. You could almost eat it, it smells so good. If you’re looking for how to make curly hair less frizzy, this is another great hair product for frizzy, curly hair.

How to treat frizzy curly hair: Brush hair with a wide-tooth comb in the shower
The most important thing about curly hair is never brush your hair dry. This will really damage your hair. There are some conflicting opinions on this, but I firmly believe that curly hair gets very damaged when brushed dry due to the knots and tangling. This damage, in turn, makes your curly hair prone to frizz.
Apply conditioner or a hydrating hair mask in the shower and then brush your hair with a wide-tooth comb in the shower. Wet hair is more prone to damage than dry hair so be gentle brushing out any knots. Start from the bottom of your hair and work up when you get the bottom knots out.

I LOVE this brush from Briogeo. This brush comes with me everywhere as I have broken many brushes in the past with my hair. This is a sturdy yet gentle brush that I have had for 2 years now. I only brush my hair in the shower when I have a conditioner or a hydration mask on. This is one of the ways that I control my naturally frizzy curly hair.
By brushing your hair with the hair conditioner or hair mask on, you will be able to distribute the hair conditioner or hair mask throughout your hair. This will reduce frizz in curly hair as all the hair strands get conditioned and hydrated. With curly hair, if you do not brush through, it is hard to have all the product distributed to every hair strand.
Although a specific hair brush for curly hair doesn’t seem like a needed hair product for curly hair, it makes a huge difference!
How to treat frizzy curly hair: Use a leave in conditioner
To keep your curly hair frizz free and hydrated, you can use a leave-in conditioner to lock lots of extra moisture in. When it comes to thinking about how to maintain curly, frizzy hair – think of your main objective of keeping your hair hydrated at all times. Apply leave-in conditioner to wet hair.
Here are 3 different hair conditioners I have used and loved for treating frizzy curly hair:
As you can see, I really love Olaplex products. I started using Olaplex early in 2020 when everything shut down. Now I have a bathroom cabinet full of Olaplex goodness. I love applying Olaplex 6 after washing my hair to give my frizzy curls an extra boost of hydration.

How to keep curly hair from frizzing: Use a gentle hair towel
Years ago, I was looking for how to get rid of frizzy curly hair. It turns out I was making my own hair even more frizzy. I was towel drying using a cotton towel with vigor! This was causing a lot of friction, frizz and damage to my hair.
I started using Cozy Earth’s hair towel and it has made such a difference. I leave my hair towel on for 5-10 minutes and then style my hair as usual. This is a great hair product for frizzy hair. It is the best way for drying hair quickly, without damaging the hair strand.

Hair is most vulnerable when it is wet so it is important that you treat it with care when drying it (no vigorous hair drying with a towel)! I love the new Cozy Earth hair towel.
It ties neatly on your head and allows the water to soak into the towel with no rubbing. This saves your hair mechanical damage.

How to keep curly hair from frizzing: Use a hair oil
A hair oil is another great hair product to consider when you are thinking of hair products for frizzy hair. Hair oils keep hair hydrated and keep frizz tamed, without looking greasy. You only need a few drops of hair oil to reduce frizz. A little goes a long way with frizzy hair. I use hair oil on the day that I wash my hair.
If I see that my hair is beginning to look a little frizzy, I will add a few drops of hair oil to keep my curly hair from frizzing. If you find your hair is looking dry mid wash, add a few drops of hair oil to add moisture. If the ends of your hair look dry, then add a little hair oil.
I first used Moroccan Hair Treatment about 10 years ago and still use it to this day. It is one of my holy grail hair products for curly frizzy hair. In general Moroccan hair products are amazing for curly hair.
I also love Olaplex 7 hair oil. This looks like a small bottle but I have been using it for months and months and there is still lots left. Remember a little hair oil goes a long way when keeping curly hair from frizzing.

How to keep curly hair from frizzing: Use a curl cream
Using a curl cream is essential for learning how to treat frizzy curly hair. Curl cream will keep curls defined and the frizz at bay. A curl cream will have specific ingredients to really define and hold your curls. Us curly girls cannot expect frizz free hair with no curl cream. This is an essential step for our hair type.
Once you have found a curl cream that works for your curly hair, you’ll have an easy way to stop curly hair from frizzing.
I apply curl cream to wet hair after washing and also add it between washes if I feel I need a touch up. Everyone’s hair texture is different. Some hair loves a lot of curl cream and other hair types only need a little bit. Use trial and error to test out how much your hair needs to keep frizz away. If you have fine hair, use only a little curl cream so your hair is not weighed down.
Distribute the hair products evenly. It’s easy to forget about the back of our head when adding products. Put as much product on the front of your hair as the rest of your hair.
I love using Oribe Curl Control Silkening Cream
This is a really luxurious hair product that I treat myself too. It is a salon hair care brand that is LOVED amongst celebrity hair care stylists. I find that when I use cheaper products, I end up using more and the frizzy curls come back way faster. Oribe have quality hair products and beautiful packaging to match.
I also love Mizani 25 Miracle Cream. If you are looking for a more affordable option, then this is a great hair product for frizzy, curly hair. This feels so smooth and does not give my curls a crunch. Mizani 25 Miracle Cream has a whopping 25 benefits for frizzy, curly hair.
I highly recommend this as a great frizzy hair product.
How to keep curly hair from frizzing: Use a humidity spray
Oh humid weather….have you ever gone on a sunny vacation and suddenly your hair is big, poofy and frizz levels are at an all time high? This was most likely because of the humidity in the air. When I go to humid places like NYC in the summer or Florida, my hair gets extra frizzy.
To stop this, you can use a humidity spray.

This Living Proof No Frizz Humidity Shield is a great frizzy hair product if you live in a hot area or if you are going on a summer vacation to somewhere humid soon. To check the humidity in your area, you can use the weather app on your phone.
I live in San Francisco so I don’t need to use this daily. I only need it when I am going to a hot, humid place.
How to keep curly hair from frizzing: Avoid using hot tools
Using hot tools damages your hair strands and dries your hair out. This leads to frizzy hair. As much as you can, avoid using a hair dryer and hair iron. The heat damages your hair.
If you don’t want to work the natural look, then try to get as long out of your hair style as possible so you minimize the heat damage to your hair.
All hair dryers are not made the same. Some hair dryers are MUCH better than others. There is a reason that people rave about the Dyson hair dryer, it is the best blow dryer for curly hair. Use a diffuser attachment to get the most curl definition and reduce the damage to your curls.
While Dyson is a very expensive hair tool, if you dry your hair multiple times per month, it is worth it to save you needing to spend even more time and money on fixing the damage from a regular hair dryer.

If you have curly hair and like straight hair, this next section is for you:
Similarly, all hair irons are not made equal. One of the best straighteners for thick curly hair is the T3 Lucea ID 1” Smart Flat Iron with Touch Interface. It is so innovative as it picks the temperature that works best for your hair.
I know when I used to use flat irons first, I would always choose the top heat as I thought it would be the most effective. With this innovative function, you will not singe your hair. Straight hair is beautiful, but there is a price to pay for us curly girls.
Shop T3 Lucea ID 1” Smart Flat Iron with Touch Interface

When I stopped drying and straightening my hair, I found my hair went from wavy hair to very curly hair. There was a time about 10 years ago where I used hot tools so much. This caused damage to my hair so I stopped.
How to keep curly hair from frizzing: Use a heat protectant if you style your hair
Remember air drying always wins in the damage ratings. If you do decide to use heat tools, use a heat protectant to avoid damaging your hair. If you are looking for ways on how to control frizzy curly hair, this is a must. A heat protectant is essential to protect your hair and make those curls frizz free.
My 2 favorite heat protectants for frizzy curly hair are:
Drybar Hot Toddy Heat Protectant Mist
Bumble and bumble Bb. Heat Shield Thermal Protection Mist
How to keep curly hair from frizzing: Use a silk pillowcase
A silk pillow case is now the new must have for learning how to treat frizzy curly hair. A silk hair pillowcase will protect your curls from friction over night so you don’t wake up looking like Hagrid.
This silk pillow case comes in lots of different colors and sizes. I also LOVE this new silk pillowcase from Cozy Earth. It is so soft and gentle on your hair. Friction with cotton also causes breakage so a silk pillowcase is a great investment. Silk pillowcases also help with reducing frizz. Curly hair tends to get frizzy with the friction of cotton, but silk will help the hair glide instead.

How to keep curly hair from frizzing: Get your curls trimmed often
Trimming your curls often will avoid split ends, dead ends and help manage frizzy hair. It was a little difficult to do this over the past 2 years but now I am hoping we will be able to go back to our regular trims to manage our curly hair!
Find a good hair stylist and stick with them. It’s hard to find someone who is good with working with curls at the best of times.
