What is Olaplex?
Firstly, I want to quickly go through what is Olaplex? Olaplex is an amazing patented hair system that has gained massive popularity as it noticeably repairs extremely damaged hair.
There are lots of products in the Olaplex systems which can lead to a little confusion in their use and purpose. In my Olaplex reviews HERE, I go through all of my favorite products in detail.
In this Olaplex blog post, I am going to give you a little more Olaplex facts based on some Olaplex myths that I have heard on Olaplex.
Olaplex Myth 1: Olaplex is only for colored hair
I have never colored my hair and I use Olaplex to repair and hydrate my hair. Olaplex can be used on all hair types including colored and non colored. Olaplex is used a lot in salons in order to repair damaged, colored hair, however, Olaplex is suitable for natural hair and unprocessed hair. I have seen amazing results from Olaplex and Olaplex works wonders. My sister who has blond highlighted hair LOVES Olaplex as it really strengthens her hair.
Olaplex Myth 2: You have to use all Olaplex products to see results
While using the entire Olaplex collection will have your hair looking hydrated, repaired and shiny, it is not necessary to use all the Olaplex products to see results. I love to use Olaplex 3, Olaplex 6 and Olaplex 7. My newest Olaplex favorite product is Olaplex 8. There are many more Olaplex products available for use. You can simply use Olaplex 3 and see great results or choose any Olaplex product and notice a difference.
Some Olaplex products go really well together like Olaplex 3 and 6 or Olaplex 3 and 8. These Olaplex products can really yield great results. It is important to note that these top Olaplex products are not compulsory to use together. My Olaplex review here really goes into which Olaplex products to buy e.g. Olaplex 3 v 6 and Olaplex 6 v 7.
Olaplex Myth 3: Olaplex 3 & Olaplex 8 are the same
Olaplex 8 is the newest Olaplex product and I really love it. Olaplex 8 is a Bond Intense Moisture Mask. This Olaplex mask really works to hydrate the hair. Olaplex 8 adds shine, smoothness & body while providing intense moisture to treat damaged hair.
When we look at Olaplex 3 v 8, the main difference is that Olaplex 3 works to repair, protect and strengthen. You apply Olaplex 3 before you wash your hair and Olaplex 8 after you wash your hair. You can see my in depth Olaplex 8 review and Olaplex 3 review here. I talk through which is better, Olaplex 3 or 8 and also how to use Olaplex products.
You can use both Olaplex 3 and Olaplex 8 together and it is highly recommended as they work well together to repair and add shine, smoothness and body.
Olaplex Myth 4: You can overuse Olaplex
There are lots of Olaplex products including pre wash treatment Olaplex 3, Olaplex 4 Shampoo, Olaplex 5 conditioner and more. The Olaplex products are made to perfectly complement each other. By using lots or all of the Olaplex products, you will not overuse Olaplex.
There are lots of instructions on how to use Olaplex products included in my Olaplex reviews HERE.
While I use Olaplex 3 weekly or sometimes every other week, you can use it more than this or less than this and still see results. I recommend washing your hair every couple of days but you don’t need to use Olaplex treatments everytime that you wash your hair. It won’t damage your hair if you do.
I highly recommend avoiding washing your hair every day as this strips the essential oils. This is one of my top tips to keep your hair healthy and full. You can read all my other easy hair care tips HERE.
Olaplex Myth 5: Olaplex is a protein
To provide a little bit of background on our hair: When hair is damaged whether by thermal, chemical, mechanical or other factors, the disulfide bonds in our hair are broken apart. This results in single sulfur hydrogen bonds. When we have paired disulfide bonds, our hair is healthy.
When a disulfide bond breaks, two things can happen. The first reaction is that the single sulfur hydrogen component pairs with a single oxygen molecule. This is a good thing! No additional damage will happen.
There is one other thing that can happen – a single sulfur hydrogen molecule will join three oxygen molecules creating a sulfate group. This is what we don’t want to happen.
Olaplex helped me to learn that the protonated sulfate is known as Cysteic Acid. Cysteic acid then eats the protein out of the hair. Protein makes our hair strong and healthy.
OLAPLEX works by pairing with the single sulfur hydrogen bond faster than the three oxygen molecules can. I found this so informative to learn about how Olaplex is different to other hair care treatments.
Olaplex is a bond multiplier, not a protein. Olaplex creates strong healthy bonds to strengthen the hair.
Olaplex Myth 6: You need to use a lot of Olaplex to see results
I have been using Olaplex for well over a year now and I saw results even after my first use. You don’t have to use Olaplex all the time to see results. I use Olaplex products often as I love the Olaplex results. Even if you incorporate one or two Olaplex into your hair care routine, you will begin to see results very fast. If you use Olaplex even once, it will help to repair your hair.
The strengthening of the bonds by Olaplex will not revert or wash away so the benefit of Olaplex stays with you once used.
More top tips to keep your hair in amazing condition
Hair is most vulnerable when it is wet so it is important that you treat it with care when drying it (no vigorous hair drying with a towel)! I love the new Cozy Earth hair towel. It ties neatly on your head and allows the water to soak into the towel with no rubbing. This saves your hair mechanical damage. My Cozy Earth discount code LORNARYAN40 gets you 40% off everything on Cozy Earth including this hair towel.
I also LOVE their new silk pillowcase. It is so soft and gentle on your hair. Friction with cotton also causes breakage so a silk pillowcase is a great investment. Silk pillowcases also help with reducing frizz. Curly hair tends to get frizzy with the friction of cotton, but silk will help the hair glide instead. You can get this silk pillowcase for 40% off using my Cozy Earth discount code LORNARYAN40 for a limited time. Read more about the benefits of silk pillowcases.
